Choosing the right Vacuum Sealer

We are here to help! Each vacuum sealer is different in some shape, form or fashion. So to help you through your struggles, we evaluate top brand vacuum sealers, listing key features, ratings and consumer reviews, and provide the results of our research in each product review. When it comes to choosing the right vacuum sealer, there’s no right or wrong way to go about it. Your choice should be based on your needs and only you know what those needs are. Vacuum sealers come in many makes and models. When considering which model would be best for your household, you should first consider the following:

Your budget

Vacuum sealers range in price, and although some may have more features when compared to others. Setting a budget can help narrow down your options and eliminate your search time. What features are you looking for?

Allotted Space

Vacuum sealers are available in different sizes but most newer models are positioned vertically. Some designs are sleeker than others, and some offer a flip up feature which takes up even less space. Know your space requirements before you make your purchase.

Finding replacement parts

Vacuum sealers contain parts that may at some point need to be replaced.  Usually, the manufacture can direct you to a local store or offer to ship out replacement parts. Regardless of the brand, certain components such as gaskets, cap suctions, indicator lights, heating tape and wire, just to name a few, sometimes need to be replaced. Certain models offer repair kits that consist of frequently, ordered, replacement parts. Other models seal parts individually. Finding replacement parts shouldn’t be hard but is sometimes necessary. The best thing to do is to avoid purchasing vacuum sealers where users have had problems finding parts. This is another reason why it’s important to read reviews.

Availability of Bags

Most vacuum sealer bags are available online and can also be purchased at local stores. In most cases, unless ordering in advance, you would probably want to at least have an option to purchase replacement bags locally. If you’re in the middle of packing up some holiday leftovers, you wouldn’t want to have to wait for an order to be shipped.

Some bags are more expensive than others and prices may vary from $0.50 to $1.00 depending on the vacuum sealer. Although some vacuum sealers can use universal bags, it’s still a better choice to go with bags recommended from the manufacture for the best results.  Readily available food storage containers, bags, accessories and replacement parts, are important factors to consider.

Vacuum Sealer Pricing

Prices will vary based on makes, models, and even more so, features. You know the old saying…”you get what you pay for,” well, it applies when purchasing a vacuum sealer also. Pricing on a good vacuum sealer could range from $100 to $600 plus. Our research indicates that many machines priced below $100 does not deliver well on quality and therefore receive bad ratings and reviews. The most common complaints were regarding the heating element, which is needed in order for the sealing feature to work. Some user complaints referenced certain features not working at all or only working for a short time, such as the hands-free feature, which meant users had to press down on the vacuum sealer during the entire sealing process and even then it would not switch to automatic, nor trigger the heat sealer. Other users complained of  slow sealing speeds, gaskets coming off and overall bad quality. When replacements were offered, they often had similar defects.

Features

If this is your first time purchasing a vacuum sealer, you probably won’t be familiar  with many of the features. If you’re looking for a replacement vacuum sealer, you’ll find that some of  newer models have more advanced features. Either way, it’s a good idea to have some general knowledge of key features and functions. There are vacuum sealers with additional built in features for added convenience such as roll cutters and drip trays. There are others that offer hands-free and one touch operations which may be ideal for first time buyers.

Another thing to be aware of is that certain features can only be found within certain brand names. For example, FoodSaver is one of the more popular household names when it comes to vacuum sealers and one feature that comes with their sealers is SmartSeal technology, which is an automatic sensing feature that makes vacuum sealing easier. This feature senses when liquids are being pulled into the sealer and make adjustments to prevent spills. Other vacuum sealers often have compatible features.

Automatic Vs. Manual: Most vacuum sealers come with an automatic and manual modes. The automatic mode does most of the work, sensing the removal of air pressure and switching automatically to sealing once air pressure has been removed. Some vacuum sealers will also do automatic bag cutting. This is a great feature especially for beginners because most of the work is done for you.

Manual sealing requires you to set the time or monitor when the sealing process should begin. Some vacuum sealers have a seal now feature that allows the user to stop the vacuuming process at anytime and begin the sealing process at once. The manual feature allows for more control of sealing levels.

Some popular features:

  • Speed Settings: Most vacuum sealers have 2 speeds
  • Sealing Levels: Most sealers have 2 sealing levels
  • Drip Tray: Convenient for catching liquid overflow
  • Hands Free Operation: Vacuums, seals, and shuts off with one touch

The Difference Between External Vacuum Sealers and Chamber Vacuum Sealers

External and Chamber Vacuum Sealers operate with the same intention of removing air from bags and sealing. Both use bags, however, different types of bags. To determine which vacuum sealer is best for you, consideration should be given to the quantity and size of the items being sealed.

External Vacuum Sealers

External vacuum sealers have a seal bar and vacuum channel. The vacuum channel sucks the air out of the bag. Once this is done, the seal bar will then seal the bags edge closed. The seal bar works by heating up and barely meting the bag while it is sealing.

External vacuum sealers are used for packing and sealing done in small quantities, more so for home use. They are very popular and the least expensive type of vacuum sealers. External sealers do not handle liquids very well.

Chamber Vacuum Sealers

Chamber vacuum sealers operate at higher speeds when compared to External Vacuum Sealers. Chamber vacuum sealers have handles that the user use to control the amount of air taken from the bag. They also have timers that the user must set on the seal bar before the sealing process will begin. The vacuum sealer is ready to seal bags once the vacuum chamber is set.

Chamber vacuum sealers can be used to seal liquids. Instead of using a vacuum channel, chamber vacuum sealers operates with a vacuum pump and because of this have more power. Chamber vacuum sealers are useful for individuals and businesses that do large scale packing or perhaps Sous Vide Cooking.

Chamber vacuum sealers come in both home and commercial use models.
